American Horror Story
Right, so I take back pretty much everything I said about American Horror Story, because it really got its shit together towards the end. Unfortunately, it took roughly 6 hours of total film, or 8 weeks if you were actually watching it on TV, to work out what made it good. Maybe US TV audiences are more forgiving, and allow a show more time to grow and flourish, but you have to understand that 12...

artifist: I won’t pick out any specifically, out of respect, and that this is not in response to any one person who says this, but the whole concept. The idea that a writer is something more, something transcendent. I am a writer because I write. The same as my dad is a delivery man because he delivers things, and my mum is a teaching assistant because she assists a teacher.  I hate this...

Crazy older ladies boy toy managed to pronounce Samhain correctly. I mean, he got little of the surrounding mythology correct, but he at least pronounced it right, which is pretty impressive by US standards.

Started Watching American Horror Story
I’m a third of the way through series 1 and … I’m just not getting it. It feels like the writers rented a book about how to write a horror movie, but never bothered actually watching one. There’s no engagement with the premise whatsoever, it’s just premise. And the worst part is, it’s actually a really good premise; Desperate Housewives written by Stephen King....

Facts about Thomas Sankara's regime
artifist: I gotta be honest as much as I love his speeches I’m like, hesitant to find out more about him because you KNOW there’s something horrible hidden away somewhere. Been scorned by revolutionaries too much in the past. Apparently Sankara shut down the unions and stopped the free press, but his reasoning for the union-busting actually sounds pretty legit (in his words, at least). And well,...

milkntwosugars: I think it’s probably the most authentically London movie full stop. Even with zombies it manages to paint the most accurate portrayal of life in the suburbs of London that I’ve ever seen in a film. And I will love it forever. Hot Fuzz does it as well. As silly as it got, it was a pretty accurate portrait of a small English town considering the circumstances.

seriouslyamerica: AllAboutJesuschrist.org: Was Jesus born on December 25? There is no evidence for this date. So then, who decided that Jesus’ birth would be celebrated on that date? The early Christian church did not celebrate Jesus’ birth. It wasn’t until A.D. 440 that the church officially proclaimed December 25 as the birth of Christ. This was not based on any religious evidence but...

Irish slavery
King James I and Charles I led a continued effort to enslave the Irish. Britain’s famed Oliver Cromwell furthered this practice of dehumanizing one’s next door neighbor. The Irish slave trade began when James I sold 30,000 Irish prisoners as slaves to the New World. His Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the...

Shameful Confessions
As much as I hate Grammer Nerds, I have to admit that whenever I mention bell hooks I always make sure it’s in a sentence with at least one other proper noun so that a casual observer will know that it’s how she chose to spell her name and not just me being too lazy to hit the shift key. midnightrevue: I’d like to take a moment to underline that ‘right wing’ inherently means LESS state control, so to call this ‘right wing wanking’ is pretty wrong, really.
