One of the Pythons was an Arthurian scholar, most of the set pieces of the film were based on exaggerations of elements of the legends. The castle full of wenches? Actually happens in the original too.
Being a bunch of geeks, they genuinely took great pride in their work, regardless of their budget constraints. They’ve quite proudly claimed - and others have confirmed - that The Life Of Brian is the most accurate depiction of that era of Judea put on camera, despite being a complete piss take.
