I could not stop smiling while watching this.

Again, I just love the fact that not only was he genuinely impressed with this, but that his first question, after he’d found out who the kid was and what the thing in front of him did, was “Can we try it?”. Like, fuck health and safety, I wanna see what this thing can do! Then, on finding out how powerful it was, wondered it they could make it stick to the wall. And not only did he want to try it out, but pitched in, without patronising the kid.

Most importantly? He let the kid fire it. I realise that’s a really small thing, but he’s the President Of The United States Of America, at a blatant photo op, and even at the most awesome and fun part of the demonstration, let the kid take all the credit for his own invention. The headlines weren’t “President Obama fires kids air cannon”, it was “President Obama watches as kid demonstrates his invention”, which is a subtle but important pleasantry.

I dunno, I just like him as a guy. His whole presidency has been filled with little token gestures like this, like letting the kid play with is hair, or fist bumping the staff at the White House. It’s just nice to see the most powerful man in the world having the time, patience, and genuine awe for an eighth grade science project.
